Kwame Appiah, the breakout star from Netflix’s Love Is Blind US season 4 is opening up about his recent health scare that could have ended tragically.

Back in November, the reality star thought he was just “a little bit sick,” saying that he “felt just a little bit off.”

The 34-year-old didn’t take it seriously until his health took a turn for the worse. By December, the LIB contestant had ongoing fevers and had shed an alarming 20 pounds, prompting him to seek medical attention as he was convinced he had cancer. He was eventually diagnosed with a potentially fatal condition

Relaying his story on Instagram, Kwame recounted, “In November, I got just a little bit sick, I felt just a little bit off, but I didn’t take it too seriously.”

He continued, “And then next thing you know, we’re about a month in. So, here’s why that month of waiting really hurt me. Because by the time I actually got to the doctors in December, I was having fevers for about three weeks. I had lost 20 pounds.”

Expressing the gravity of his symptoms, he added, “So, based on those symptoms, the doctor determined it could be an array of things and one of those things was cancer.”

Thankfully, instead of cancer, doctors diagnosed him with ulcerative colitis, a serious condition that inflames the rectum and colon, leading to symptoms like persistent diarrhea, abdominal pain, urgent bowel movements, weight loss, and reduced appetite, reports the Mirror.

Despite his harrowing experience, Kwame is deeply thankful for the love and help from his wife Chelsea Griffin, who he met on the Netflix dating show, and friends over these challenging months.

Opening up about his journey, he stated, “Let’s bring this full circle, back to the purpose behind why I’m actually telling you this.”

He delved into the lessons learned from battling ulcerative colitis at its worst: “One, just a quick reminder that life is incredibly precious. I didn’t realize how important the normal things I did in my day were for me until I couldn’t do them anymore. Lesson number two, small things can lead to big problems if we ignore them. So don’t.”

Kwame emphasized the importance of awareness, saying, “Lesson number three, information is everything. You have to know what it is if you are going to fight it.”
