“Love Is Blind” alum Shaina Hurley revealed she was diagnosed with cervical cancer while pregnant with her son, Yiorgos David, last year.
During an interview with People published on Wednesday, the TV personality shared she learned about the cancer after undergoing a routine pap smear when she was two months pregnant.
“I had no symptoms,” she said. “But later, the doctor called me and said the pap smear results had come back as abnormal and they needed to get me in for a colposcopy.”
A month later, Hurley had the procedure but was told “right away” that her results were “not looking good.”
Within a day, she was diagnosed with Stage 2 cervical cancer.
“I felt the fear creeping in but I knew then and there, I can’t let the enemy take over my mind,” she recalled.
“I can’t go down that dark hole. I had to go into survival mode and tell God, ‘I trust you.’ I just prayed for the best, at the end of the day.”
The mom of one was advised to undergo a cold-knife biopsy to determine how far the cancer had spread and to remove what they could.
“The problem is, I was pregnant. [The] cervix is what holds pregnancy. I was at just around three months and so I would most likely lose the baby,” Hurley told the outlet.
“At that point, I just couldn’t risk it.”
Hurley explained doctors then advised her to undergo a round of chemotherapy when she was around 22 weeks pregnant, but she denied the suggestion because the cancer “hadn’t spread to the lymph nodes” and she “had no symptoms.”
“It was hard for the doctors because I was their patient first. And I was a tough patient,” she said, adding that doctors then advised her to induce labor at 32 weeks.
“I felt it was too early,” the influencer said. “I took the risk and pushed it to 37-and-a-half weeks and delivered a healthy baby boy.”
Hurley and her husband, Christos Lardakis, welcomed their son on Feb. 1, 2024, after previously experiencing a miscarriage.
Shortly after giving birth, she experienced a mini-seizure while feeding Yiorgos and made a speedy recovery with no serious side effects.
A month later, she had the cold knife procedure, though it wasn’t successful.
“The cancer was still in there,” Hurley explained.
However, she underwent the removal procedure for a second time and was “finally” declared cancer-free in June.
While she has to wait a year, Hurley and Lardakis hope to welcome more children together.
“For now, I’m focusing on being a mom and taking it day by day,” she shared.
In March 2022, Hurley revealed she had been in a “serious” relationship with Lardakis over a year after breaking off her engagement with her “Love Is Blind” match Kyle Abrams.
That same month, the couple got engaged.
They tied the knot in an intimate courthouse ceremony in July 2022 and later hosted a larger ceremony with friends and family in Greece.
